For many complete quadriplegics the next stop after the ICU is a skilled nursing facility. You may need to continue trying to wean from the ventilator and aren’t strong enough for rehabilitation services yet, but care isn’t so critical you need to remain in intensive care.
This is the hardest part: trapped in a body that no longer responds when we command it to move. We are institutionalized, and probably don’t have our most essential loved ones around at all times because the world is still turning even though now we’re lying still.
We are clinging to life, surviving, breathing, even if it takes machines to do it. Trust the worst is soon behind you. The journey ahead is tough, but surviving up to this point is half the battle. Take your recovery one day at a time. Life is still out there waiting for you.
