There are no definitive treatments yet for spinal cord injury. However, ongoing research to test new therapies is progressing rapidly. Figuring out procedures or treatments to mitigate the effects of paralysis is considered one of the toughest of medical problems. Restorative neuroscience, though, is showing hope. Then there’s spine stimulation and stem cells and brain reading.
A number of published papers and case studies support using human umbilical cord tissue-derived stem cells and bone marrow-derived stem cells for spinal cord injury. Some people with spinal cord injuries choose to bank the umbilical cord tissue of their children conceived post injury, or their grandchild. Banking is expensive. To store the tissue for 20 years costs several thousand dollars.
In some stem cell clinical trials patients have shown significant improvement in their control and sensation of bowel and bladder and power and movement of lower limbs and upper limbs.
Don’t seek stem cell therapy from a commercial operation with no peer review and research outcome. The science isn’t there yet, but that doesn’t stop doctors from offering the treatment in Panama or a number of other countries. Some people pay a lot of money for zero results.
