AVOIDING BLOOD CLOTS

02/14/2026
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) can be caused by immobility. These are blood clots that form because your blood isn’t circulating normally. An aching, swollen spot may indicate a DVT. If the clot travels to the lungs you can get a deadly pulmonary embolism. You may have a pulmonary embolism if you experience severe and sudden chest pain and difficulty breathing.

To prevent blood clots you may wear tight elastic stockings like Thrombo-Embolus Deterrent (TED) hose, specially designed to help reduce the risk of developing DVT in the leg. Pneumatic boots or leggings which are connected to an air pump machine, can also be worn. The boots tighten and loosen to push the blood back up to the heart to help keep clots from forming.

You may be prescribed an anticoagulant. You must use caution when using an anticoagulant. You'll need to stop use a few days prior to most surgical procedures. Make sure all your physicians know you use the anticoagulant.
